The Joker card originated in a card game called Euchre in the 1860s. It was a trump card originally referred to as the "Best Bower" card. It has since been adopted as a replacement card for damaged or missing cards as well as a wild card in certain games.

In some variations, the Joker is used. The game of BlackJack varies from casino to casino, and in varying locations. It is incumbent upon you to ask the "pit boss" about the rules, which are normally displayed prominently at the table.
Variants that may require explanation:
1. Is surrender allowed?
2. Is early surrender allowed?
3. Does the game have Jokers?
4. How many Splits are there? Can you Split and then Double Down?
5. Can you Double Down on any two cards (say a K+2)?
6. Are there No Bust rules?
7. Can you "short stack" a split or double down? (Example : your bet is $100.00 and you are dealt 9+9, and dealer has 8 as the up card. You only have another $50.00 in your wallet. The advantage is yours if you DD---will the house accept the $50.00 "short stack" bet? Can you place this type of lesser bet on an ordinary Double Down?
These and other variations may benefit the player, just as other variations improve the house advantage.
