They are not the same. They are two separate holidays with different focus. Memorial Day is the last Monday of May and is to remember those that died in the service of the US Military. Veterans Day is the 11th of November and is to show appreciation to those that served their country, living or dead.

There is a difference between the two. Memorial Day was the first holiday. It was to memorialize by decorating the graves of all those who had fallen in defense of their country in the Civil War (1861-1865). Veterans Day honors the sacrifice of all veterans made in defense of the US. Veterans Day was originally called "Armistice Day", for it was on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month 1918 that the guns fell silent ending WWI.

To put it most simply, Memorial Day is for remembering those who died in service of their country, Veterans Day is for honoring those who survived, as well.

November 11, 1918 was to become known as Armistice Day in remembrance of those millions who gave and lost their lives in World War I.

In 1921, one of the last acts of the Arthur Meighen's Unionist government was to draft legislation making Armistice Day a legal holiday to be celebrated on the same day as Thanksgiving Day, which was to be the first Monday of the week in which November 11 fell. It was in this same year that the Canadian Great War Veterans Association adopted the poppy as the official symbol of "remembrance for war dead"
