Protists can be both. The organisms formerly classified as the kingdom Protista are a widely varying group, and most share only their unicellular or undifferentiated structures.

So it appears that protists may be autotrophs or heterotrophs. Some are even mixotrophic. The autotrophic forms are called plant-like protists. The heterotrophic form are called animal-like protists. Others gain nutrients like fungi, by absorbing nutrients from decaying organic matter.
