Most factory finishes are fine for novice-intermediate skiers (assuming the base is flat) but you will still need to hot wax your skies to obtain better glide, durability and longevity of the bases. Better skiers and races will always tune their skis the way they like them, and that generally means changing the base and side edge angels. Most skiers don't "detune" their edges any more with the newer shaped skis. A ski that grabs too much is more likely the fault of poor balance and not the tune.
