Yes there are, I caught 3 of them by hand yesterday that were crawling around in the water on cement blocks that were encrusted with oyster shells. They can be hard to spot because the shells on some of the crabs gets completely covered with algae.

All crabs are scavengers. hermit crabs eat pretty much what ever floats to the bottom, or what they find on the beach.

NO! It is never safe to have hermit crabs next to a window. The temperature fluctuates too much. In the summer, the sun can come through causing your tank temperature to rise dramatically, possibly baking your crabs. Hermit crabs need a fairly stable environment of 80 degF and 80% humidity. Next to a window, these conditions are hard, if not impossible to maintain.
