There are a number of ways your gift to the University of North Carolina School of the Arts may be named in memory of a deceased friend, relative or alumna/us. Or, you may make a contribution to the School of the Arts in honor of an individual or organization.

Scholarships Scholarship funds support annual awards to students and may be based upon achievement or financial need. Your scholarship gift may be unrestricted and used where the need is greatest, or you may restrict your gift to one of the five arts schools: Dance, Drama, Music, Design & Production or Filmmaking.

Named Endowed Distinguished Scholarships [Minimum $100,000]

Income from these funds supports annual awards to students who demonstrate exemplary accomplishment. The funds may be restricted to one of the five arts schools or may be unrestricted and used where the need is greatest.

Named Endowed Scholarships [Minimum $25,000]

Recipients may be restricted to one of the five schools or may be unrestricted.

Named Annual Scholarships [Minimum $2,500 per year]

Annual scholarships are provided on a yearly basis. The scholarship remains in effect at the discretion of the donor. A named term scholarship for a four-year term, for example, can be established with a pledge of $10,000 or more. Faculty and Guest Artists Income from endowed faculty funds is used to provide supplemental salary and additional support for travel, equipment needs, staff assistants, research, special projects and other activities to enhance teaching for resident faculty.

Your gift can bring noted guest artists to the campus to teach and share their experiences with students. Guest artists represent the plurality of approaches in the arts and complement the work of the School's resident faculty. Guest artist endowment funds provide money for travel, housing and salaries.

*Through a special challenge grant initiative issued by the State of North Carolina, endowed professorships totaling $333,000 will be matched with $167,000 to create a $500,000 fund. Endowed professorships totaling $667,000 will be matched to create a $1 million fund. To qualify for matching funds, the gift must be paid within a five-year period.

A named endowed fund in this category supports the work of the School of the Arts by providing assistance to bring noted alumni to the campus for master classes and public appearances.

Named Guest Artist Endowment Fund [Minimum $50,000]

A named endowed fund in this category supports the work of the School of the Arts by providing assistance to bring noted guest artists in any arts discipline to the campus for master classes and public appearances.

Named Endowed Community Music School [$500,000]

Your gift to endow the Community Music School would provide funds to supplement salaries for music instructors and provide music and instruments for needy students.

Named Endowed Preparatory Dance Program [$300,000]

Your gift to this fund would provide salary assistance for the instructors of this unique program, which is offered free-of-charge to children in the community.

Named Endowed Open Doors Music Program [$50,000]

Your gift to this fund would provide program support for this annual weekend for gifted young junior high and high school students from the Southeast region. This program is offered free to the participants.

Named School Excellence Fund [$10,000]

Your gift may be designated for general program use by a specified school (Dance, Drama, Music, Design & Production, Filmmaking) by allocating $2,500 for a minimum of four years.

Not as good as if you get a degree in something more popular like computers or management or science. As an art student, you're going to either end up working at an ad agency or some other type of company that produces popular art, or you're going to become a "starving artist" as you slave to try to become famous. Most artists have "day jobs" to pay the bills while they work at their art in their off hours.
