Any automatic drive train can be used to build a trike, but the most comon is the VW setup. Some bugs came with autosticks, and squarebacks and fastbacks came with autosticks and full automatics. All work great for trikes.

Are reverse trike scooters legal in California?

YES! However few of the inexpensive Chinese trikes meet all of EPA, DOT and California CARB (clean air) requirements. Its likely the Chinese trikes meet EPA and DOT requirements or they would (should) not be sold in the US. But these are mostly 48 or 49 state trikes, not 50 state (incl. CA) trikes. In CA I see lots of scooters/motorcycles for sale that people bought cheap somewhere else, and now can't register them for the road at the CA DMV due to no CARB certification. Always make sure a used scooter/motorcycle is already registered in CA before purchase. Reverse trikes (2 front wheels) are much safer than typical delta (1 front wheel) trikes because of better braking (front wheel(s) brake while rear wheel(s) lift), and braking while turning.
