There are about 200 dead bodies left on Everest.
They are left because conditions are so severe, that the extra strain of bringing them down may well cause the Death of the retrieval party too.

Mount Everest is a two month climb at the very least, even for the most experienced climbers, and rescuers. Most of the dead climbers perished in a section of the mountain referred to as the "death zone", which is about 26,000 feet high. This area is by far the most dangerous, and where many people meet their fate. Survival is the top priority on this part of the mountain, and margin for error is slim to none. Immediate frost bite will take place, and the lack of oxygen will weaken and subdue the climber's mental capacity due to the very low oxygen levels. Therefore, rescuing bodies that have succumbed to the harsh conditions in this area is not worth the risk.

The last estimate is that there are approximately 200 bodies on the way up the mountain that have never been retrieved. And that's only since records began, there may be many more from eras before.

∙ 6y agoThere has been around 280 people die on Mount Everest while trying to reach or return from the highest summit in the world. The most famous two are George Mallory and Andrew Irvine. Many of their body’s are in view from the route used to ascend and descend from the summit.
