Under most circumstances, crime is more common in urban areas.

There are several reasons for this. In the first place, more people live in cities and towns than in the countryside (the UN believes that the world became majority urbanised some time in 2008).

People often live more closely together in urban areas; and this makes crime both more tempting, and easier to conceal. (It is easier and safer to steal a mobile phone left on a bus, than to trek across three farmsteads to take one).

Crime is more likely to be reported in an urban area (where there are probably police) than in very remote rural locations (where they may be no police force to report to). And if a crime is not reported, it is moot whether it has been committed.

This is not to say that rural areas are better places to live. Most modern anthropological research suggests that battery, murder, and rape are endemic in primitive rural societies at apalling levels.

But 'crime' is an urban concept.
