When you are writing the two letter abbreviation, (ex: CA), you are supposed to use uppercase letters. But when you writing out the entire word, (ex: California), you are supposed to only capitalize the first letter. In states with two words, (ex: New Jersey), you have to capitalize both the first letter of the first word, as well as the first letter of the second word.
