It was a major strategic victory for the allies. If the Japanese had won the Coral Sea, they would've been able to invade Port Moresby. Although it was undoubtedly a tactical defeat for the Americans (the loss of a full, Lexington Class aircraft carrier, and many naval aviators), it also took a heavy toll on the Japanese. (Death of many Japanese aviators, plus the light carrier Shoho.)
