East was communist and run by the Soviets. The West side was run by the Allies and remained free of Communism.

Berlin. It was divided into West Berlin (capitalist) and East Berlin (communist) by the Berlin Wall. The Berlin Wall was torn down in 1989, and East Berlin and West Berlin were formally reuinted in 1990.
Putting it very simply: the Cold War partitioning of Berlin and the fact that many people in East Berlin were fleeing across the border to West Berlin and freedom. The communist government built the wall to prevent these people from fleeing.
The Berlin wall started when Germany was divided up into 4 section 1 for the U.S 1 for the USSR 1 for France and 1 for Britain then after that the people in east Berlin were trying to escape communism by fleeing into the western side of Germany the communist were angry and decided to built a wall stopping all from crossing the boarder.

The Berlin Wall divided Berlin into East and West Berlin. East Berlin, also called the Eastern Bloc, belonged to Soviet Russia and was communist. West Berlin was democratic.
