The directions in between are basically a combination of two adjacent directions.

- Northeast

- Northwest

- Southeast

- Southwest

You can also be more specific and indicate the direction with degrees. For example: North 50 degrees West.

The four primary or "cardinal" directions are north, east, south and west. In between are "semi-cardinal" directions such as northeast, southeast, southwest and northwest.

Experienced sailors can "box the compass", reciting all 32 of the standard "points" of the compass. For example, between northwest and north there are 3 "points", such as "north by northwest" (the title of an excellent Alfred Hitchcock movie!) and "north by northwest, half west".
