Answer

It's the hydraulics in your pedal, and it's normal to hear some slight hissing. If you hear a lot of air, and it seems like your breaks aren't working, then have it checked out.

If the hissing is louder than normal or gets louder as you depress the brake, it could very well be the power brake booster. If it almost stalls the engine while holding the brake down, this would indicate an excess loss of vacuum in the system, which helps control the engine operation. If this is the case, there is a good chance the booster has gone bad, and needs to be replaced.

One other item to look for is less responsive braking than normal, in other words, you are having to push down further or harder than normal to slow or stop the vehicle. The power booster is what gives you "power assisted brakes".

97 sebring you have tail signal lights but no brake lights at all?

if you have checked all your fuses and they are ok this has happened to me already.... more than likely your brake pedal switch has gone bad. sometimes your cruise control brake override goes out with this but more than likely not. replacing this is somewhat aggrivating if you have large hands. you have to unhook the connectors while it is still connected to the brake pedal brace and then pull it out of the pedal brace bar. then you have to put the new one in its place and reconnect it after you make sure it is being contacted by the brake pedal when it is not depressed.

Why won't parking brake light go off in my 2000 Honda Accord?

More than likely it has to do with the brake light switch. There is a contact button on the brake light switch that is depressed whenever the brake pedal returns to it's normal position (not depressed). This contact is pressed in by the upper part of the brake pedal. You can check the operation of the switch by pressing and releasing the contact button with your finger while someone checks to see if the brake light goes on and off. If the brake light goes on and off, the switch is OK. There may be a missing pad on the brake pedal that is causing the switch contact button to not be depressed. There may be a hole where this pad was once attached and the switch contact button is now going into the hole and not getting depressed. One solution is to place a bolt into this hole and secure it with a nut. Place the bolt so the head of the bolt will now come in contact with the switch. Otherwise, go to your Honda dealer and get a new brake switch contact pad.

How to check if brake light bulb is not working in a 1999 windstar?

Have someone stand behind the van while you press the brake pedal. It works equally well if you switch roles and have the other person do the brake pedal ;)

Brake light wont go off with engine off on 2005 caravan?

I had this problem when I shut off the vehicle while the brake pedal was still depressed. I would recommend you start the vehicle up, turn on all lights, then shut back off and turn vehicle off without have foot on brake pedal. These vans havea feature which keeps the lights on for a short period after the vehicle has been shut down, but I think there is a fault in this feature when you turn off the vehicle with the brake pedal pressed, which causes the brake lights to stay on even though the vehicle is off

How do you put the parking brake on a Murray lawn tractor?

First, push the clutch/brake pedal all the way in (forward) with your left foot. Then, while holding that pedal in, lift the small handle (the parking brake) on the right side of the engine housing (just above the right foot rest area) with your right hand. While holding the small handle all the way up, release the clutch/brake pedal. The pedal will move back only a short distance and stay there. The parking brake is set. To release the parking brake, just push the clutch/brake pedal forward and the small parking brake handle will fall down, releasing the parking brake. By PhilfromPA

What does it mean when the brake lights work on a 2006 Escalade but the tail lights do not work?

The tail lights and the stop lights work off of different circuits. The stop lights work when the brake pedal is depressed while the tail lights work when the light switch is turned on. Look for a burnt fuse or a bad connection.
