the very definition of different species is the inability to interbreed. if they can produce a fertile offspring they are not different species but varieties or cultivars or strains instead.

Yes I believe that an African elephant and an Indian Elephant did once breed, however the calf did not survive to maturity

The Asian elephant and African elephant are not related in anyway. The Asian elephant is actually more closely related to the extinct mammoth than to the African elephant.
