Being in the posession of a felony conviction will not stop you from earning your EMT-B license, although it may limit the places you can apply to and eventually work for. Some county and state orginizations may have rules in regards to hiring someone with a felony conviction. Check into the local laws or county/state laws concerning this before you take the class.

Previous answer was entirely incorrect. Although a pardon would remove the burden completely, a person convicted of a felony may still become a paramedic.

It depends, however, on the state you're attempting to certify in. Most states have policies that do not specifically discriminate against persons with a conviction record, but allow that each case will be decided on a case-by-case basis depending on:

  • The merits of the individual
  • The type of offense
  • How much time has elapsed since the conviction
  • Community involvement since the conviction

The State of New York, for example, only requires a waiver from the state board of health.

With that said, even after you become certified it may still be difficult to find a job with a fire department or ambulance, as many companies discriminate due to the stigma attached with a "felony."

Best of luck to anyone who chooses to pursue this venture, and remember: keep at it. Determination and follow-up are the best ways to change a prospective employer's mind.

Probably not. First thing they will do for paper work in EMT classes is start off with a background check. If you fail it, (and if you're a felon, you would) you would be asked to leave the training program.

NREMT is another matter, they will want to know if you were accused of, but not convicted and even offenses that were expunged from the record.

No. In order to be a paramedic you have to first become a basic EMT. You are not allowed to take the EMT course if you have a felony conviction.

OK, first of all, I am sorry your wrong! You can be a EMT and also a PARAMEDIC! I AM an EMT and yes have a background, however it is non violent and non drug. and THAT is the ONLY thing you will have an issue with, as long as you have not hurt someone or was a drug dealer or something overly bad you will be fine! just contact the collage BE HONEST!!!!!! and most will help you. go to a Vol FD and get on and then apply to EMT school as them being your sponsor. and honestly until you go for you "Nat Reg" you only get a state Background ran anyway.

Good Luck
