Don't know about '03 model. My 2002 Escape XLT with 3.0L engine has 130k miles with only minor problems. Still runs great and I drive it 45 miles each way to work ea day.

I had to replace the battery in mine and I pushed the unlock and lock buttons at the same time and it started to work again. Hope that helps, if not call your local Ford dealsrship, they told me they could reprogram it for free.
