A child inherits factors or genes from each parent that determine his or her blood type. This fact makes blood typing useful in paternity testing. The blood types of the child, mother, and alleged father are compared to determine paternity.

Paternity can only be truely identifed by doing a DNA fingerpring on the parents and child. Knowing the blood types is a good screening device, but if any one of the individuals are Type O, then the results may be useless. There is a gene that can inhibit the expression of the ABO gene. An AB genotype will test out as Type O if the inhibitor gene has been turned "on".

It normally can't. A paternity test is done by DNA testing, not by testing the blood type. Testing the blood type to perform a paternity test would be highly inaccurate, due to the fact that if they found a match to the blood type, they would have a large number of people to sort through still.
