Yes, Breast cancer and its treatments can have an impact on a woman's ability to breastfeed. The extent of the impact can vary based on factors such as the stage of the cancer, the type of treatment received, and individual circumstances. Here are some ways in which breast cancer and its treatments can affect breastfeeding:

Surgery: Breast cancer surgery, such as a lumpectomy or mastectomy, can disrupt the normal breast tissue and structures, which may affect the milk-producing glands and ducts. Depending on the extent of the surgery and the location of the tumor, breastfeeding might be more challenging or not possible on the affected side.

Radiation Therapy: Radiation therapy to the breast can cause damage to the remaining breast tissue, including the milk-producing cells. This damage may reduce the ability to produce milk in the affected breast.

Chemotherapy: Chemotherapy drugs can sometimes affect fertility and hormone levels, which might impact milk production. Additionally, some chemotherapy drugs are excreted in breast milk and can potentially harm the baby. Breastfeeding during chemotherapy is generally not recommended.

Hormone Therapy: Hormone therapy is commonly used in hormone receptor-positive breast cancers. These therapies can interfere with milk production and are usually not compatible with breastfeeding.

Targeted Therapies: Some targeted therapies used to treat certain types of breast cancer can also affect milk production and breastfeeding.

Medications: Pain medications and other drugs prescribed during or after treatment might not be compatible with breastfeeding.

It's important to have open discussions with your healthcare team about your desire to breastfeed if you have been diagnosed with breast cancer or are undergoing treatment. They can provide personalized guidance based on your specific situation. In some cases, healthcare professionals might recommend against breastfeeding due to potential risks to both the mother and the baby.

If breastfeeding is a priority for you and you're planning to have more children in the future, discussing fertility preservation options with your healthcare team before starting cancer treatment can be beneficial.

Not 100% sure what you are looking for here. Clearly the breasts will grow in size because of the room required to hold the milk that is produced.

There are also health benefits for your breasts including a decreased chance of breast cancer.

If you are thinking about the breast changing and maybe going a bit saggy, that is pregnancy doing that not breastfeeding. The nipples however goes darker.

Breast feeding decreases the risk of developing breast cancer later in life. If you have breast cancer and you're breast feeding, you should of course discuss this with your doctor.

Breast implants can negatively affect your ability to breast feed. The impact of breast augmentation depends on how the surgery was done. Some of these procedures introduce the implant through the nipple. These types of procedures obviously will harm the milk ducts necessary for breast feeding. Other types of procedures bring the implant in other ways and do not hurt your chances of successful breast feeding as much. I do know that many women who have had implants have been able to nurse their children. I would encourage you that if you do have trouble with your milk supply to talk with your doctors and at the very least to breast feed your child as much as you can. Even if you need to feed your baby supplements while breast feeding, you are helping your new baby greatly by nursing all you can.

Is it safe to supplement with formula while breast feeding?

Yes you can switch to formula. However, its better to breast feed the baby because breast milk can help in the development in the baby's immune system. Plus the best thing about breast feeding your baby is that it really helps the mother lose a lot of weight after the baby is born. But if you are breast feeding make sure to keep an eye on your baby to decrease a chance of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome), the mother's breast may "smother" her baby by accident. while the baby is being fed, if the baby is held too tight to the breast of the mother, she may be covering its nose and the baby may not be able to breath and suffocate.

Is feeding a baby formula equal to feeding breast milk?

Breastfeeding is recommended for the first six months before switching to baby formula. There are more nutrients and health benefits to the baby when using breast milk.

Why does baby cry at the breast when fed?

If the baby cries whilst feeding it could be the fact the baby's airway is being blocked by your breast. Press on your breast a little to make sure the baby's nose is not being covered by your breast. If you are uptight the baby can sense this too. So make yourself comfortable prior to feeding, and relax at all costs.
