No. As a both a rabbit owner and as someone who has a significant allergy to rabbits, I can safely say (from both personal experience and medical advice) that rabbits are not hypoallergenic. Cute, yes. Great pets, certainly. Hypoallergenic? No.

Rabbits are sensitive to many things:

  • Food: Some foods are dangerous and should always be avoided; other foods should be used with caution because too much can lead to illness. It's important you research foods before giving them to a rabbit. See the related question below for more info about the rabbit diet.
  • Stress: Rabbits are prey animals, so they're very sensitive to stress. Loud noises and chaotic environments (screaming children, barking dogs) are obvious stressors, but even in a calmer environment, if the rabbit doesn't feel safe and secure, it will suffer from stress. Stress can lead to illness in rabbits, so it should be minimized as much as possible. Some ways to help the rabbit feel safe and secure include: (1) Putting a "hidey-hole" in the rabbit's habitat where you never bother it (this can be a simple cardboard box with two holes cut in the sides -- see the link about paper safety below for details); (2) Let the rabbit vent its energies on toys (see the related links below about toys and playing); (3) Spay/neuter the rabbit -- sex hormones cause stress; (4) Let the rabbit socialize on its own terms -- make a lot of time for her, but don't pull her out of her cage or make her play with you, instead let her come to you, and let her see that she can trust you to respect her wishes; (5) Bond the rabbit with another rabbit -- rabbits are social creatures and if she's the only rabbit in the house, she may get lonely, no matter how much attention you give her, and loneliness leads to stress.
  • Digestive problems: Rabbits can't safely fast like humans can, but when they're in pain (whatever the cause, even a bit of gas) rabbits do often stop eating -- this can quickly lead to serious illness. Rabbits also have a unique digestive system very unlike cats and dogs: they need TONS of fibre, so they should eat lots and lots of hay. Many people don't feed their rabbit the proper diet and this leads to illness.
  • Dental problems: Rabbits' teeth grow continuously, so they need to be worn down by eating a lot of fibre; the kind of fibre found in hay and wood is especially important. If your rabbit isn't eating the right diet, it's teeth will overgrow and cause serious problems. Bad breeding (bad genetics) can also leads to dental problems.
  • Weather: Rabbits are more sensitive to very hot weather, very cold weather, and wet and windy weather. It's important you research what temperatures are dangerous, and learn how to protect your rabbit in extreme weather.
  • Injury (bones): Rabbits have weak bones, and they can easily be injured if they're dropped, thrown, kicked or stepped on, or picked up by the ears or limbs. A rabbit can even break its own spine if it kicks hard into free air (this is why the feet must be secured when you're holding a rabbit -- weak bones, but strong muscles!).
  • Parasites: Outdoor rabbits are susceptible to many parasites, which is one reason why it's widely recommended to keep your rabbits indoors. If you keep your rabbits outside, research potential parasites and their symptoms and treatments, and give your rabbits monthly physical exams to look for any signs; also have the vet test the rabbit's faces annually for signs of parasites.

Well lettuce and potatoes are veggies that are poisonous to them (all other vegetables are fine). And rabbits can't survive through hot days even in the shade (over 28 degrees), many rabbits die from heat stroke:( they require a frozen bottle, tile or best to be taken indoors.

If you are allergic to cats will you be allergic to rabbits?

If you're allergic to rabbits you'll probably react to other furry pets as well. Typical symptoms include red, itchy, runny eyes, nose running, coughing. However this can also be caused by an allergy to the straw bedding that's commonly used for rabbits. If you think this could be the case, switch to newspaper or paper bedding.

Is bunny fur bad for kids who have allergies?

It's really not the fur, its the dandruff of animals to which people are sometimes allergic. A kid with allergies may or may not be allergic to rabbits, but on the whole, it would probably be better to avoid rabbits.
