Aqua-Doxy is generic doxycycline (originally manufactured for human use as Vibramycin). It is packaged & labeled for ornamental fish that are not for human consumption. Doxycycline is a tetracycline-type antibiotic which has been FDA-approved & USP-listed for many years. It is not one of the "big gun" antibiotics & is effective for certain bacterial infections. However, NO MEDICATION IS EVER WITHOUT RISKS.

It is NOT SAFE to take medications labeled "not for human use" (or similar) unless you know & completely understand all of the following FOR SURE:

1. All contraindications to taking this drug & that you definitely don't have any of them. This includes history of allergy to a substance that makes it more likely that you are also allergic to this drug. Don't think for a minute that if you took it before with no problem, you won't have a severe or even life-threatening allergic reaction to it this time.

2. This drug is the correct drug for your specific medical problem. All antimicrobials (which includes antibiotics & others) are NOT the same or for the same infections. Do you know what microorganisms commonly cause the type of infection you have & what anti-microbials are appropriate for them? Are they bacterial or non-bacterial (fungi, yeast, viral)? Are they likely to be gram-negative or gram-positive? Are they likely to be aerobic or anaerobic?

3. The proper dose (amount, frequency, & duration), interactions with foods & other medications, & how to avoid them.

4. Potential adverse reactions ("side effects") and what to do if they happen. Some can be instantly life- threatening.

5. That this drug - the one you're holding in your hand & are about to swallow- is GENUINE (& how to tell that it is or isn't). If you cannot positively identify the original manufacturer that actually made these pills, whether this drug made by this manufacturer is indeed FDA-approved, & confirm that it is what it says it is, DO NOT TAKE IT! There are too many fakes / counterfeit drugs out there; some are quite dangerous. (This author has NO reason to think that Aqua-Doxy is one of these.)

Inappropriate use of antibiotics is precisely what causes resistant strains of pathogens (bad microbes that cause illness) such as MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus). Aqua-Doxy is labeled "not for human use" (or similar). A prescription for doxycycline typically costs about $5.00 for up to 60 pills from a local pharmacy (such as Walmart, K-Mart, Sam's Club, Costco, Walgreens, etc.). If you truly know what you're doing, Aqua-Doxy may be what you need.
