By satellite, the question might refer to the dish that feeds a satellite receiver in a home or it might mean the small object that sits 20,000 miles or so above the Earth.

We can deal with the satellite itself very quickly - No, there is no such thing as a simple, home made satellite. Besides, it would lead on to the project to build a simple, home made rocket to launch it. These won't be happening any time soon.

Moving rapidly on to the dish, they are fairly simple devices. They use a metallic dish in a parabolic shape. That is the shape that reflects the signals forward on to the LNB - the lump on the end of the stick in front of the dish. The LNB support is also fairly simple - it's nothing more than a stick but remember it has to be exactly the right length and the right angle if it's going to hold the LNB in the right place.

The next part of the dish is the bracket to hold it in place. It needs to be substantial because a fraction of a degree movement is enough to lose the signal. A high wind can be enough to move it if the bracket isn't firm enough.

The LNB is the electronic device that collects the signals and turns them into a signal to be sent down the wire. They are ultra high frequency devices that cannot be built at home, so buy one rather than attempt to make one. Here is where the home project goes wrong - Although LNBs can be bought by themselves, they are often more expensive than an LNB with the dish as part of the package. So, unfortunately, the home built satellite dish is likely to cost more than buying one and is unlikely to perform as well as a store bought dish. But if you decide to try anyway, then good luck.
