If you have a sand filter, kinda. The needles can get past the plastic catch baskets and enter your filter. They lodge in the sand and are very difficult to backwash out. Eventually they build up and start to cause vortex's through the sand to the spider leg returns causing bad circulation and returns debris back into the pool. Try a finer mesh basket but the bottom drain will still let needles through. Each year I take the top off the filter and swirl my hand in the sand and remove clumps of needle's. Do the hand swirl a number of times, digging deep to get all the needle clumps. Recap, fill, and backwash.
