Yes, many but mostly military. The Concorde passenger plane even flew above the speed of sound. Chuck Yeager is the first person credited with flying faster than the speed of sound in 1947.

A few kinds of airplanes travel faster than sound, such as the Concorde SST and supersonic fighter jets.

There were two SST (SuperSonic Transport) planes that ran regular passenger services in the late 20th century.

- The British-French plane Concorde began flights in 1969. But noise restrictions and a fatal crash in 2000 eventually ended the use of the aircraft around 2003.

- The Soviet (Russian) plane was the Tupolev Tu-144, which began service in 1968 but was phased out in 1978 and used for cargo flights until 1983.

What travels faster airplanes or speed of sound?

The speed of sound does not travel. In the event that an airplane's airspeed is below Mach-1, the speed of sound is faster than the speed of the airplane. On the occasion and at the moment when the true indicated airspeed of an airship or an airplane is in excess of Mach-1, the airplane is at that time traveling faster than the speed of sound.

Why you see a distant event before you hear it?

Because the speed of light is much faster than the speed of sound. Therefore, when the light from that event reaches your eyes, you see it. Then later, the sound from the event reaches your ears, and you hear it. Basically it's just because light travels faster than sound.
