If Wild rats are a problem than poison baits or traps will make them go away. Pet Rats on the other hand can be trained with care and patience to do tricks. In the Hollywood films they have used trained Rats simply because trained rats do what the director of the film wants done

My pet rats, which were Hooded rats, where very intelligent. They were easily trained to give 'kisses' (to place their nose on my nose) with a simple command. They also, however, where smart enough to work the latch on their cage, so they could easily escape.
A wild rat is naturally timid and would rather run then stand and fight, however they will defend themselves and their offspring if threatened. Domestic rats, if properly bred and trained, are very friendly and very few will ever bite. Well raised pet rats are highly affectionate.
