Depends on what type of trauma it is. If it's causing you a lot of stress or lowering your immune system then that can trigger or aggravate a break out.
Only if you are going through an outbreak, this is when the sores are discharging and can infect others by contact.

..and you can get herpes.
No, the virus that you're thinking of (HSV1) causes cold sores and fever blisters. HSV2 causes genital herpes. Both are members of the family Herpesviridae, but one is a common infection everybody gets and the other is an STD. They are both forms of herpes (that's what the H in HSV1 and HSV2 stands for...) A small pimple on your lip is most likely not genital herpes. They both are not 100% bound to one area. They both CAN be transmitted from mouth to genitals or genitals to mouth. If you recently gave oral sex to someone that had a current outbreak of genital herpes, it is possible (although not likely) that you contracted HPV2 on your lips. You can consult a physician to find out for certain.
I myself have oral herpes (born with it) and have two lip (labret) piercings .I even got a flare up on the piercing a day after i got it .It healed all the same no long term problems. I learned from a Holistic and All Natural Medical Practitioner that by taking the supplement l-Lysine every day , you can just about eliminate the herpes outbreaks. Personally I have been taking it for over 20 years now and only had one or two outbreaks. When I DO get an outbreak(you can tell when they are coming on) I take 2000 or 3000 mgs twice a day and the outbreak is gone in 2 or 3 days with a minimum of any discomfort. It works for me. I am not a medical doctor and can only share my experience with you.
Lip herpes is called herpes simplex type 2. Herpes is a virus that can be treated with antiviral medication if needed. It is a common form of herpes, passed on from generation to generation. It is aggravated by hot drinks and cold weather, which is probably why it got the nickname "cold sores" Herpes simplex type 1 is the genital form. As always, consult your nearest doctor or emergency room for any changes in your condition.
herpes virus or allergy to the sun The Herpes virus that causes lip blisters is not an STD, it is a virus called Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HPV1). The sexually-transmitted disease type of Herpes is HPV2. So don't worry, having those sores on your lip doesn't mean you have an STD.

herpes
It's possible but not likely to happen. You would have to use the chap stick directly with in seconds after some one with a vsible cold sore used it. Herpes doesn't like to live for long periods of time on objects.
