Some viruses can be treated with specially designed medications called antivirals which target proteins that belong to the virus at specific stages of the virus life cycle.
Examples: HAART or Highly Active Anti-Retroviral Therapy is for treating HIV and oseltamivir for serious flu infections.
However, many viruses, like the deadly measles, for instance, has no current antivirals to date. So the MMR vaccine (safe and did not kill me) has to be given and it should be two shots for life-long immunity. Overall, vaccines are preventative measures when viruses don't have an antiviral available.

∙ 11y agoThey cannot. Your body must fight off a virus by itself. Only diseases can be cured. Though you CAN get a vaccination to prevent a virus BEFORE it starts. A vaccination is really a much weakened form of the virus. A good example of this would be Influenza (flu).
