If you don't have a concealed carry permit, it must be kept in plain sight. This is a bit difficult on a motorcycle, and the North Carolina laws on open carry are a bit ambiguous... there is open carry in North Carolina, but there's also a "menace to the public interest" law in North Carolina, and the two contradict each other. You wouldn't have much of a problem with open carry in, say, Clayton, but do it in Cary or Carrboro, and you'll irk the ire of residents there. The other option is to keep it secured - that means unloaded, and with a cable or trigger lock on it. It's not considered a concealed handgun at that point. My recommendation - get your CCW.
