You should abstain from alcohol for at least 24 hours before any procedure involving general anesthesia. The alcohol can cause unpredictable and potentially fatal reactions to the anesthetic.

This should have been explained to you by your gastroenterologist. In addition to the above, if you are alcohol-dependent you should inform your physician of that as well. Alcohol withdrawal can likewise interfere with the procedure.

If you take meds, your doctor may allow important morning medications with just a sip of water.
