Can you eat a buckeye?

The idea that one half of a buckeye is poisonous is absolutely false. To answer your question, it depends on which species of buckeye you're talking about. Many Eurasian species such as Horsechestnut contain alkaloids that are mildly poisonous and eating them will make you sick. Some of the American natives such as Ohio Buckeye are edible if you remove the tannin. the native Americans would boil or soak Buckeyes to remove the tannins which can be poisonous and are most certainly unpalatable and astringent. They would then roast them and make a nutritious porridge.
