You don't need to tile a pool, if you use a good waterproof concrete render and paint it using proper swimming pool paint. (don't use emulsion)
I would think if the the crack is present only in the plaster, and not the tile, it may be surface. If, for instance my pool, has a cracked tile and the crack is extended down the side of the plaster, it is structural.
The glazing on tile happens at about 1400-2200 degrees, so only if you can get the pool up to a rather warm temp
It might stain the plaster. When you have an algae bloom, get on it right away, don't wait. See the link below for more info.
I live in Southern California and my pool cost around $7,000.00 to re-plaster and re-tile. I have a large pool with attached spa. I also had some plumbimg repairs (new Jandy valves, new return lines) which were included in this price. They also replaced the side steps (in the deep end), as these don't survive the demolition. This was in summer, 2003.
This would be the the excact same price as building a new concrete pool minus some excavation. you would be looking in the 30-to 40k range.
To replace the decorative tile border on a concrete pool, the pool will have to be drained. The old tile needs to be taken off and a new tile with waterproof grout or concrete can be installed. The pool should dry for a week or so, before it is refilled.
Color loss of what? You didn't specify loss of color on what. Tile, deck, plaster, clothing. In any case chlorine would be a more likely culprit.
tile Definitely tile!

The experts at Arizona Bead Blasting, the Valleys' #1 choice for pool tile cleaning, are now offering the newest media for pool tile cleaning: pool mineral blasting. Kieserite pool formula (Epson Salt) is specially formulated for cleaning swimming pool tiles. It's a gentle alternative to glass beads. It safely removes calcium, mineral deposits, oily residue, mold, algae and scale from pool waterline surfaces. Some pool tile surfaces cannot be cleaned with glass bead due to either their delicate nature or home owner neglect. Glass tile, black tile, decorative tile and heavily calcified pool tiles can now be cleaned with spectacular results. Kieserite costs more per linear foot than glass bead but the results are definitely worth it. Our process for cleaning is exactly the same. The only difference is the media. Kieserite -Naturally mined mineral salt: * pH neutral (7.0) * 100% Non-Hazardous * Water soluble (Dissolves in 24 hrs) * Safe on ALL tile surfaces: ** Glass Tile ** Decorative Tile ** Black Tile ** Neglected Tile * Does not require us to empty pool * NO mechanical abrasive devices (pumice, grinders or wire wheels) * NO harsh acids or chemicals * NO change to pool chemistry www.arizonabeadblasting.com 602-692-4913
It depends. If the plaster has an alkalinity build-up (a chalky white look on the plaster), you will need an acid wash. It is not something you would want to do yourself. Use a professional. If the tile has a white ring around it, that would be calcium. It will require specialized equipment to remove it. There are two methods: glass beads and magnesium sulfate. Magnesium sulfate is the newest method, and won't damage the tile. If the water is dirty, it could be a variety of reasons: pool equipment not operating properly, water chemistry unbalanced or improper circulation of water.
