The poem is about nature and in it, Hardy questions technology. There is of alot personification within it, for example, 'the proud trees that bears the death-mark on its side'. The purpose of this is to make the trees seem like they are alive so that the reader can empathise more towards it being cut. It also shows Hardy's relation towards nature. He is so close to it that when nature is being harmed it angers him. (there are alot more personifications included. If you are annotating the poem, it is hard to miss them) =)
The tall tree in the poem "Hardy Throwing a Tree" reacts with resignation and acceptance to being sawed down, embodying the theme of human dominance over nature. The tree's stoic response highlights the power dynamics between humans and the natural world.
