Typically, you cannot contract herpes from surfaces (toilet seats, for example)... HSV (herpes simplex virus) is a very volatile virus and begins to degrade immediately upon leaving the body. Slight changes in temperature render the virus unable to infect. That being said, should someone come into contact with a surface directly after it was exposed, the virus would also need an entrance into the body - our skin provides a natural barrier, but openings such as small cuts, tears, or areas where mucous membranes reside (porous tissue in the mouth, anus and genitals) could provide a gateway for transmission.

In short, it's virtually impossible to contract HSV (both strains) from a surface, because the virus is unstable, and any living remnants would need an entry point - simple surface to healthy skin contact is not enough.

How does herpes zoster differ from varicella zoster virus?

When a person gets chickenpox, the rash will go away but the virus is still in the body and becomes dormant. If the virus becomes active again in the nerves, it is then called herpes zoster or shingles. This usually occurs when a person becomes older, but only in a small percentage of the population. Herpes simplex causes the cold sores or genital herpes.

Is it possible to get a genital herpes to somebody not through sex but by just using someones panty?

The chance is very small. Once herpes hits air the virus will die almost instantly. Herpes isn't likely to rub on the surface of a towel, toilet, clothing or other items. If the herpes virus happened to rub on the surface of an item the virus would die before a person came in contact with the virus. Some studies report herpes could spread by sharing a drink but the chance is almost non existent. You can get genital herpes through genital-genital contact or genital-oral contact with someone who has herpes infection. The virus is most easily spread through contact with open sores. But you also can get the virus from skin that does not appear to have a sore. You can become infected with the herpes virus without having intercourse.

How do children catch genital herpes?

Loving parents (this category includes grumpy, tired, in-need-of-a-break parents) do not pass on genital herpes to their children through the ‘normal’ intimacies of family life. But if it does happen that they get it, it has to be by way of sexual contact. This should be reported.
