The dogs were in very close contact with the owners much of the time. It was also reported to have spread to cats, pigs, and ferrets, as well as birds from humans. Not all types of flu share the same hosts. For example, Type B influenza has hosts from the much smaller group of humans, seals and ferrets.
No dogs and humans are susseptable to different bacterias. You can however get stomach flu(E coli) from bare handleing of dog waste, but that is another matter entirely.
