What should you take for depression if you take adderall?

my doc is switching me to Prozac 20 mg after being on Wellbutrin 300mg for 2 months. I like the WB but it makes me irritable and was feeling depressed. I am weening the WB and taking Prozac now

any ssri. such as paxil, zoloft, and a bunch more that I can't think up off the top of my head but paxil is great, however some people affect differently to different drugs and paxil didn't work for me so now I take zoloft and it works miracles, but there are tons of ssri's or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. and they all work different for different people but the two best ones are zoloft and paxil so I would definitely start with one of them.

That one is a good question to ask your doctor. However, do not,under any circumstances, take an antidepressant that is a monoamine oxidase inhibitor, or MAOI. These block the action of the neurochemical monoamine oxidase which is responsible for the breakdown of dopamine in the mesolimbic pathway of the brain. Adderall, or more specifically, dextroamphetamine causes the cascading release of dopamine in the brain which is it's primary action. Taking adderall with an MAOI can lead to toxic levels of dopamine in the brain leading to hypertensive crises, heart attack and death. Therefore, while you need to consult a doctor for the real answer, something like Zoloft or another selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor or SSRI would have the least possible side affects.

Depression and anxiety are two different things, and while some antidepressants are useful in treating anxiety, that is by no means always the case. In many cases, in fact, other drugs are more effective, especially when combined with therapy.

A mental health professional can advise you. You should not depend on your family doctor for this unless she is a psychiatrist. General practitioners are not trained in psycho-pharmacology and the other specialties needed to competently treat neurochemical disorders.

Combining Adderall and other psychostimulants with with an SSRI, SNRI, TCA is becoming increasingly more popular with Psychiatrists, Psychopharmacologists. Psychostimulants have been used for decades before antidepressant meds. Combining the 2 gives a greater success rate.
