The life cycle of a walking stick insect is very similar to that of any other insect. It starts as an egg, then becomes a nymph. It then grows to maturity (adulthood) and reproduces. Some walking stick insects live for several months up to two years.

The life cycle of a stick insect is fairly simple: Nymphs that have hatched out of eggs resemble their parents, minus any wings or reproductive organs. Nymphs molt about 6 times as they grow to become adults. These "stages" are called Instas. With each moult the nymphs grow and older nymphs are often big and developed enough to determine its gender.

Their final moult into an adult will include wings (if that particular species has wings).
