They're are two ways to smell through the phone without taking it apart. The first would be to put your nose to the holes on the speaker or receiver. However, the best way is to actually use your mouth to suck the air out. You will also get a taste of it but these senses detect similar molecules. Your mouth and nose are connected through air passageways so you will also get the smell if you take the air into your throat and breath out through the nose.
This being said the most effective way would be to take the phone apart and smell in instead of actually trying to smell it through the phone.
