First off, I am not recommending this to ANYone, but it is possible to snort generic Oxycontin. It's not as good as snorting name brand, because generics are now equipped with a thin layer of gel underneath the colored coating to prevent injection and snorting. Plus, they don't break down nearly as well, and even the taste is a bit off. Once the gel interacts with moisture, it builds up and is very difficult to pass through the nasal passages. It works, just not as well. Your nose will become clogged fairly quickly. Just take them as is, you'll get more out of it. Snorting generics is a waste because you go through them twice as fast, and snorting pills in general isn't a good idea. Yeah, I know, I should practice what I preach, but I don't want to condone anything like that. Snorting pills REALLY increases your tolerance, I'm talking one week you only need x amount, and the next week you'll need double that amount, and the withdrawals are much more intense. But I'm sure you already knew that part of it :)

However, because of abuse of these drugs, extended release formulations are generally designed to gel upon inhalation, so that the drug is not well absorbed. The aforementioned practice is of course strongly discouraged, as it carries many risks. The primary concern is that, since the oxycodone is absorbed much more rapidly when 'snorted' than when taken orally, there is a significant risk of overdose. This risk is especially substantial for opioid naive individuals. Additionally, the binders and other ingredients (such as silica) in the tablet can cause harm to one's lungs. Finally, extensive snorting of oxycodone HCl can damage the nasal septum. The basic oxycodone molecule is absorbed, whereas the acidic HCl portion of the salt is left behind, thereby resulting in an acidic environment that can harm the nasal tissue.

It is also worth mentioning that tablets containing acetaminophen are even worse than single ingredient pills. Excessive acetaminophen consumption can cause liver damage, and acetaminophen is also acidic and can increase the damage done by snorting the pill. The large amount of acetaminophen also drastically increases the volume of powder that must be inhaled, which exacerbates the discomfort. In summary, all oxycodone pills, especially those with acetaminophen, should only be taken as directed.
