For people who are pregnant, Adderall® (amphetamine and dextroamphetamine) or Adderall XR® (amphetamine-dextroamphetamine extended release) may not be safe to use. This is based on animal studies that looked at the effects of Adderall during pregnancy.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) uses a pregnancy category system to classify the possible risks to a fetus when a specific medicine is taken during pregnancy. Pregnancy Category C is given to medicines that have not been studied in pregnant humans, but do appear to cause harm to the fetus in animal studies. Also, medicines that have not been studied in any pregnant women or animals are automatically given a Pregnancy Category C rating.
Adderall was given a pregnancy Category C rating because it was shown to cause birth defects and miscarriages in mice. Other studies in rodents have shown that when Adderall was used during pregnancy, it caused problems with brain chemicals. This resulted in long-term learning and memory problems.
However, it is important to note that animals do not always respond to medicines in the same way that humans do. Therefore, a pregnancy Category C medicine may be given to a pregnant woman if the healthcare provider believes that the benefits to the pregnant woman outweigh any possible risks to the unborn child.
From personal experience i have found that if the benefits outweigh the risks in taking a medication you should continue to take the prescribed medication. Now that is what i was told by my doctor. However i am no medical doctor and situations very. You should inform your ob of any medications you are on when u become pregnant and decide what is OK to take throughout the pregnancy and beond, specifically while breastfeeding. For me my adderall was deemed OK i was monotered... perfect pregnancy and my breastfeeding baby boy has no problems thus far at two months. Remember every mother and baby is different so don't try to make a medical decision on your own always inform your doctor of what you are on no matter what.
The website says you should discuss it with your doctor.
Your physician will have to tell you about it, and whether or not it is safe during pregnancy.
No, you cannot. Adderall is 4 amphetamine salts. Your child may be born what is known as a "Crack Baby", addicted to drugs. Although it's really your doctor's opinion.
It is possible to breastfeed while taking antidepressants as long as you are carefully monitored by a physician.
