Actually, it depends on the state but in NY, you need either a bachelor's or Masters in Social Work. Majoring in psychology is a good background for entering the social services field but if you want to hold the title of social worker you need to complete a degree in social work.

In essence, yes, you can. Sociology and Psychology are two distinct fields that have a lot of overlap. Psychology is the study of the human mind and behavior. Sociology is the study of group behavior; To put this in perspective: If Sociology is the science that studies social factors that influence, something like gang membership in urban areas, then Psychology is the science that studies what psychological factors may influence an African American male to join a gang.

It's the macro(sociology)focus and micro(psychology)focus overlap that influences social psychology as a field, and social psychologists. Social psychology as a field has two very different areas of focus. 'Psychological' social psychology is more focused on individual attitude formation and behavior, while 'Sociological' social psychology is (that's right!) focused on group attitude formation and behavior.

To really drive your question home, consider this: I recently graduated as a double major with my BA in psychology and sociology. And I intend to pursue graduate training in psychology(and possibly) sociology just for the heck of it! Bottom line, if this sounds like something you might be interested in, then go for it!

To become a psychiatrist you need to go to medical school. A psychology class is the most basic class you will take in your first 2 years of college. Here is the steps you need to do.

  1. Complete a bachelor degree in Biology
  2. Take the medical college admissions test ( MCAT)
  3. Complete a MD or DO degree program for 4 years
  4. Complete a residency for 4 years/ post residency fellowship may be required for licenses
  5. Get licensed and board certified
  6. Continue learning.
If you want a medical degree you need good grades and subjects like chemistry, biology, physics, math, and you must be able to read scientific data, psychology. The projected job growth ( 2014-2024) is 14% .( BLS)

Usually, to become a social worker, you need at least a Bachelor's degree in a subject related to psychology or counseling. Some agencies even expect a master's degree in social work, called a "MSW".
