Monitor Closely, and discuss with your Mental health doctor of any side effects.

Tramadol (Ultram) + Lithium

Interaction Rating: MAJOR Be cautious with this combination.

Talk with your health provider.

Tramadol (Ultram) can affect a chemical in the brain called serotonin. Lithium can also affect serotonin. Taking lithium along with tramadol (Ultram) might cause too much serotonin in the brain causing confusion, shivering, stiff muscles, and other side effects.

This interaction is listed with Drugs.com, rxlist.com and others.

This interaction is not listed in pharmacy's publications except for mental health drug interactions handbook. A lot of private doctors do not know of this interaction and prescribe it anyway.

Have caution while taking this combination, or any combination with Lithium.

These drugs are contraindicated. Tramadol interacts with the SSRI antidepressants and makes it much more likely that you will develop a potentially fatal condition known as Seratonin Syndrome. This causes rapid heartbeat, sweating, tremors, muscle rigidity, confusion, hallucination, a rise in body temperature which can be fatal, hallucinations, and coma. You also have an increased risk of having a seizure.

Do not take tramadol with SSRI medications.
