You will have to find a listing of all the serial numbers from the maker for the shotguns they made and go through them.
It is virtually impossible to trace Cartier serial numbers as many dealers fail to register the watch when they sell them. Additionally if the watch was not sold in the Continent you are trying to trace it in then Cartier will not have a record for the watch unless they've had the watch in for service.

Sometimes you can.
Trace them for WHAT? Stolen weapons? Take them to your local law enforcement agency and ask them to run them through the stolen gun file. Most will accommodate your request. To trace them for historical purposes? Contact the manufacturer.
Depends on what the rifle is, and whether or not you can trace it to the actual manufacturer. Interarms was an importer and distributor - not a manufacturer.
Only the BATFE can run a trace solely on the serial number.
Of course. Be sure to include proof that it happened. If you don't have accessible proof, the police can trace it.
No published serial number data.
