Microsoft produce a version of Word for the Mac. Allowing for the variations in formatting that cause problems even between different versions of Word on computers running the Windows operating system Word documents are compatible between systems. The "Text Edit" basic text editor application on the Mac can open many Word documents and there are free applications such as Open Office which will also handle Word documents on a Mac. Yes, but probably not what you are thinking.

You can load Word X which is M$ Word for Macintosh X systems without a problem.

But to load M$ Word for Windows on a Mac requires an emulator like Virtual PC. Load the emulator and then run it, and you should then be able to load M$ Word for Windows as if it was a windows environment.

NB: You will need to previously load a M$ operating system into the emulator first, and I don't know about licensing on that part.

You can use the Mac version of MS Office on a Mac. The current version as of this answer is MS Office 2011 for Mac. Files made with it are compatible with Windows versions of Office.

If you want to run the Windows version of Office on a Mac you'd have to do it with Windows in a Virtual Machine, or using some Wine based software like Wineskin or Crossover.

There are also other Office applications that are compatible with MS Office like OpenOffice and LibreOffice for the Mac
