It depends, if you're with a certain network (carrier)like [uk] orange, three, vodafone [us]at&t, sprint etc, then no... unless its unlocked, or if you get it from t-mobile, then yes, you will be able to use a t-mobile sim card.

At this current time there are no cell phones that are designed for the united states market that can accept 2 sim cards. I know that there are phones sold by Verizon wireless however that can use Verizon cdma network which doesn't require a sim card and then allow a sim for uses overseas on Vodafone's network. Besides that if you are really that set on having 2 sim cards in one phone then there are a few site that sell a piece which must be soldered onto the circuit board within the phone and then i have no idea how you can switch between the 2 sims.
SIM card lock or Network lock is a restriction put in by the service provider that would not allow the user to use a SIM card from a different carrier. In order for a owner to easily switch SIM cards from different GSM carriers, the phone must first be unlocked.

It sounds like your phone is locked to a specific network (not the network for your SIM card). You might need to get it unlocked before you can use the SIM you have.
