Hubris is basically a sense of pride or self-confidence that leads to trouble for the character who possesses it.

A good example is of Friar Laurence in Romeo & Juliet who believes he can marry two teens w/o their parents knowing so he can help end the longtime feud. Then he goes on to think he can help Juliet out of her marriage w/ Paris, then he thinks he can fake Juliet's death w/o any trouble.

He had hubris, that unhelpful sense of self-confidence & pride in literature.
