Beetles over winter in the ground and develop in the spring, come out of the ground and search for food and a place to lay their eggs.

Planting short-season to maturity potatoes can allow time in the spring for the beetles to come out of the ground and be attracted away from location before planting potatoes. By the middle of June in the Northeast, most p. beetles will have emerged from the ground to find no food available.

Beetles are attracted to leaves of potato, ground cherry and nightshade family. Remove the listed plants before beetles emerge from ground in may or June and plant potatoes mid-June.

Once your potatoes are planted and your know you had an infestation last year...

Spread molasses around the base of the plants out to a foot and stir in....the bugs hate the smell and willlay egggs elsewhere.

If you see beetles, hand pick as often as your schedule can handle. Once the hand picking is done, spray molasses reduced with water 50/50 on the surface of the potato leaves, top and bottom. Again the beetles don't like the stink of it and you will be on your way to controling them.

If you like to stay within organic standards....use these last effort possibilities:

Bacillus thuringiensis var. tenebrionis kills young larvae but not older larvae or adults.

Neem oil applied on ground around potato plants as well as weekly on leaves can disrupt the cycle of potato beetles and eventually keep them under control. May need to be applied as frequently as every three days for extreme infrestations and certainly after rainfall.

Don't forget that as much as 30% of the top side leaves on the potato can be diimnished before there is any effect on the potatoes below ground.
