The most typical cause is overheating the coolant, and the cylinder head Warps. this warp causes a gap in the metal seal, thus Coolant or Oil can seap into areas they were not supposed to be in.

only remedy is to remove the head from the car, have it machined flat ( getting your head decked ) again, install a new head gasket and reassemble it back together. For V6 or V8's, you need both headgaskets replaced. also old anti freeze turn to a acid when older then 2 3 years a high ph will attack head and intake gaskets (always change coolant ) wrong head bolt torque will cause failure finally an improporly grounded electrical can cause what called electrolis where the cars volage actually slowly eats away gaskets same reson zinc tabs are used in a boats outdrive and transom
