Drain the oil from the Cherokee engine. Remove the oil pan bolts and lower the pan. you may need to unbolt the motor mounts and raise the engine slightly to get the pan out. Clean all of the pan gasket from the pan and the block. Put the pan back on with a new gasket then fill with fresh oil.
Put a new gasket on.....
I recommend you have the A/T fluid changed every 36,000 miles.
Try changing you oil and if that does not help you will need to rebuild the tranny or replace it.
You unscrew the old filter, wet the seal on the new one with oil, and screw the new one on hand tight.
Yes, but besides just filtering oil, oil viscosity breaks down too. So change the oil too.
The oil pan gasket on a 1997 Pontiac Grand Am GT is changed by draining the oil, removing the oil pan bolts, and removing the pan. The old gasket is scraped away, a new gasket is placed on the pan, and it is bolted into place.

Anytime you change an oil filter you should pre-fill it with oil. This will reduce the time it takes for the oil pump to build pressure and get oil to the engine. I use a 3/8 drive socket and extension and an oil filter socket. Remember to apply a thin layer of oil to the gasket and only hand tighten an oil filter when installing. It's a good idea to run the engine and check for leaks.
The oil filter gasket is built into the filter itself, so just by changing the filter, you always get the new gasket.
That is an oil level sensor.
