The Athenian city-state, or polis had several unique characteristics. The Athenian city-state had a strong political center that dealt with international as well as national affairs. Athens was one of the strongest city-states because of it's succession of dynamic leaders including Solon and Pericles.

For one the families were usually always together. The men were the head of the house and did the manly work. The women stayed home and did the housework. The little boys would go to school and learn the ways of their fathers. The little girls would stay home and learn the ways of their mothers. The elders were respected greatly. That's just a little snippet.

Athens became the first democracy in the Western World. Yet, it was an extremely limited democracy. Only freeborn property-owning men, both of whose parents were born in Athens, could vote. That said, citizens were expected to vote in the Assembly (city council), and to take part in juries numbering Five Hundred. There was a three-tier tax system, with the top-tier providing warships and sponsoring civic-religious festivals, the lowest tier rowing in the warships or fighting in the infantry, providing their own armor and arms, and the middle-tier supplying goods and weapons for the ships and fighting in the cavalry.
