4 degrees before TDC, is a good rule of thumb. Remember to plug off the vaccuum advance on the dist. Other wise you will bring in the vaccuum, which would activate the centrifical.......

Also, depending on the computer version, you may need to disconnect the computer from the distributor before making adjustments. In the old CCC system, there were two connectors on the distributor, a 2 pin power connector, and a 4 pin computer connector. Manual timing is set with the 4 pin connector disconnected. Of course you would then need to clear the fault code afterwards. I don't think this applies to the OBD-II system; you should check the shop manual in any case.
